Fine Arts

Fine Arts at St. Francis encompass art, music, drama, and humanities. The department distinguishes itself through its instructors, who are practicing artists. The faculty provides all students daily opportunities to express their creativity through a multitude of artistic mediums. The department strives to foster individual and group creativity in a safe and nurturing environment. Students are encouraged to create and display original artwork, write and conduct their own distinct musical compositions, and stage and perform a wide range of dramatic productions.

The program promotes opportunities for students to interact and then connect their environment to their art and ultimately their community.

Student work is showcased and performed annually in a number of ways. A Fine Arts evening occurs every other year which showcases all student artwork. Grandparent’s Day presentations include classic and original music and dance performances. Three drama shows are produced each year in which students are involved in all aspects of the dramatic process from acting, technical work (including lighting and sound), costuming, program design, and even writing and directing.

The student experience is enriched by bringing artists to the campus, as exemplified by our artist in residence program. Sculptors, painters, ceramicists and fiber artist have taught their respective specialty to the students and left wonderful memories as well as a priceless piece of art. Additionally, the Louisville Orchestra annually performs on the Garvin Brown Amphitheatre to the delight of the entire student body. Aside from bring fine arts to the campus; our program has students reach out into the community in a number of meaningful ways. Several unique school-wide responses to natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, resulted in projects like “Bowls of Hope” and “Blankets of Comfort”. Recently, all students and teachers were encouraged to hand knit hats to donate to the local Salvation Army.

As you can tell, we believe that the fine arts experience is critically important in the development of every St. Francis student into an informed and well-rounded citizen.
