Junior Soccer
The Junior Soccer program took the field this past weekend at the Goshen Campus. The teams turned in great performances.  They are off this weekend for the holiday, but will return to action the following weekend at Collegiate.

Middle School Soccer
Last Thursday, the MS soccer team travelled to Whitefield for a pair of games. The A team lost 2-1 with a goal from Will Cole on a sliding kick to beat the keeper. The B team lost 3-0 with outstanding performances from Brian Haupt, Rex Reitz and Lars Barbercheck.

On Friday, the B team hosted Anchorage and fell 6-1.  Isaiah Green scored the lone Wyvern goal in the contest. The A team pulled out a 5-3 victory with goals from Levi Tyler, Owen Carey, Will Cole (2) and Kyle McLaughlin. Will’s goal was a header off a corner kick cross by Owen Carey.

On Monday, OSL came to Goshen to take on the Wyverns. The B team opened the afternoon with a 7-1 victory. St. Francis got plenty of offense in this one and goals came from six different players: Lars Barbercheck (2), Isaiah Green, Stevaun Butler, Rex Reitz, Tyler King and West Middendorf. Brian Haupt played a fantastic game in goal. The A team pulled out a hard-fought 1-0 win in the match. Lake Mackin and Bruce Hamilton shared the shutout in goal. Will Cole scored on a deep corner shot assisted by John Ospital’s throw-in.

Varsity Soccer
Last week the St. Francis Varsity soccer team played in the 7th Region All “A” Tournament at KCD.  On Wednesday night it took the Wyverns penalty kicks to get past Whitfield, eventually winning 3-2 after two rounds of PKs.

The win catapulted the team into a semifinal matchup with Walden on Thursday night.
The Wolverines were no match for the Wyverns and were easily dispatched by a score of 6-1.  Sophomore Wah Doe Moe led the Wyvern offensive attack with a hat trick of goals in the game.

After two tournament rounds, the Wyverns’ depth took a hit as a number of players were forced to sit out the championship due to injury. Goalkeeper Sam Erbes was out, forcing St. Francis to make some drastic changes for the finals against KCD.  The Wyverns fell in the finals 5-0.

Three Wyverns were named to the All “A” 7th Region All Tournament Team following the tournament:  Wah Doe Moe for his hat trick against Walden; Sam Erbes for his game-winning save against Whitefield; and Chris Malpartida for his overall outstanding play throughout the tournament.

With little rest after a busy week, the soccer team was back at it Tuesday night against district foe Manual. After another unfortunate slow start, the team regrouped and played the last 60 minutes with the passion and intensity they showed earlier in the season, building great momentum going forward. Senior Jonathan Simpson stepped into goal for this game and played well, demonstrating some solid form he picked up from his training as a freshman and blocking 14 shots on goal. Unfortunately, the Wyverns were not able to mount a comeback and fell 8-0 in the match.

Upcoming Schedule

Junior Field Hockey
The 1st/2nd grade (12) junior hockey team took the field for their first competition of the year on Saturday morning at KCD.  This was their first game of the season and the experience of playing is helping them grow. Coach Sarah Dewberry is excited about the team and its potential.

The 3rd/4th grade (34) junior hockey team also took the field on Saturday and played a solid game.  Coach Tamara Reif has high hopes for this talented group of girls.

Upcoming Schedule
Saturday 9/5 @ Collegiate Team 12 @ 9:00 a.m.; Team 34 @ 11:00 a.m.

MS Field Hockey
On Monday, the A team played another tough contest at CAL.  Though the team fell 8-0, Coach Misty Chanda was pleased with the effort,  “All the girls set goals before the game and all were able to accomplish their individual goals. A very impressive effort on the part of all the girls.”

The B team traveled to Collegiate for a match and romped against the Amazons to the tune of 6-1.  Three Wyverns scored in this contest, led by Reese Ragland, who netted four goals.  Marley Diamond and Katie Hammond also scored goals in the contest.

Tuesday night the B team traveled to Noe for a tough match and fell 5-0.  With only four 6th graders and the rest of the team 5th graders, it was an uphill battle against an all-6th grade team, but they fought hard during the entire game.
