Sports Teams Return to the Field

The start of school marked a return to the fields for our fall sports teams.  High School and Middle School teams all took to the field in mid-July for practices, and now that the first day of school is out of the way, teams have begun playing games. The Back-to-School Picnic featured Middle School clinics for field hockey and soccer, followed by intrasquad scrimmages for the Varsity teams.

Field Hockey
The varsity field hockey team is seeing the return of 13 players, and with a young team that also includes eight new players, the 2015 team is a mix of youth and experience.

The Red/White scrimmage was played as a 7v7 game during the Back-to-School Picnic on Saturday.  8th graders from our Goshen Campus joined the game to fill out rosters.  In a tight contest, the White Team was victorious 1-0.  Both sides played well and provided a preview of their excellent team defense.

On Tuesday, St. Francis traveled to Seneca for their first home game of the season.  The Wyverns dominated this game, playing like a team and remaining in the offensive circle the majority of the time. Seneca had one break-away midway through the first half, where the Wyverns had a defensive breakdown and allowed them a goal. Though the girls were giving Seneca’s defense a ton of action, they were not able to finish with a goal until the last 10 minutes of the game. Junior defender Sterre Spijker was pulled up to help out on an offensive corner, where she ripped a powerful shot and sent the ball straight into the goal. This took the Wyverns into overtime, 7 v. 7 for 10 minutes. Once again SFS spent most of this time on offense, and though tired, they were able to push through when 8th grader Bradley Wilson scored the winning goal with three overtime minutes to go. If this game is any indication of the St. Francis field hockey varsity team’s season, we are in store for an exciting few months!  Up next, the Wyverns will host their home opener Wednesday against Butler at the Goshen Campus.  Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.

The Middle School teams have their first matches next week.  Go Wyverns!

The varsity soccer team welcomes back 15 returning players, including six seniors.  This coming season, Coach Marshall and his team are looking to improve on their 2014 campaign.

On Saturday, Wyverns hosted a Red/White intrasquad scrimmage on the Goshen Campus. The starting offense (Red) faced the starting defense (White), with defense eventually prevailing 4-3, thanks to Matthew Siciliano’s winning goal. Several 8th grade players joined in the scrimmage, showing that they are ready to move to the next level.  Thanks to everyone who made the event possible.

On Tuesday, the soccer team hosted a strong Holy Cross team, losing 5-0 on the Goshen Campus.  During the first half the Wyverns controlled the tempo and had many scoring opportunities, but a few defensive mistakes and inability to finish gave Holy Cross a 2-0 lead at half.  After they scored a quick early goal in the first minute of the second half, our players were on the defensive for the rest of the game. Sam Erbes did a great job stepping into goal for Harrison Crawford, who is out with a back injury.

Up next for the team is a JV game Friday night at Whitefield.  Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. The Middle School teams open their seasons on Friday night at KCD, with the A team (7th/8th grades) underway at 4:30 p.m. and the B team (5th/6th grades) following at 5:45 p.m.
