New Year, New Space

By Suzanne Gorman, Head of Downtown Campus

IMG_5113Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! We’ve welcomed our freshman class of 46 students, plus six transfers (two 10th, four 11th) and two exchange students (from Brazil and Germany). There’s the usual excited, expectant feel to the start of the year, as well as a bit of an unsettled feeling, because our renovation is still not quite complete. So the students know that within a month or so, we’ll be inhabiting some completely new spaces. We should be able to open the Broadway entrance, new Commons Room, Wyvern Store, etc. by about the end of September.

This week, we’ve had a Community Service assembly to go over the sites for this year and have students sign up for their preferences and a Projects assembly to explain those offerings and how it works. Today we enjoyed Advisee Groups for the first time; these are small (9-12 students with a faculty/staff member or two) gatherings that span all four grade levels and are our Friday morning tradition.

The bookends to the week are our 9th grade orientation and our 12th grade rafting trip. On Monday, the freshmen spent the morning at school orienting to their classes, downtown, and general school life. Then in the afternoon, we traveled to Otter Creek Park/Camp Piomingo to do some low-ropes teambuilding activities, to help orient them to one another. These new classmates did a fantastic job working together. The seniors left Thursday afternoon on the annual whitewater rafting trip that kicks off their year. They’ll return Saturday, having conquered the rapids and enjoyed lots of s’mores and bonfire time.

New parents had this covered during orientation sessions, but for returning parents, log into your Parent Portal (where you did your back-to-school forms, view your student’s grades, etc.) and check out the new teacher pages through the Portal. We are not using the pages linked to our web site any more; instead, your student’s schedule and homework assignments are right there on the Portal for him/her and you to see! We are excited about this change and hope it proves useful and easy for students and parents.

Here’s to a fantastic school year!
