New Families, a New Round of Projects and a Musical!

By Suzanne Bizot Gorman, Head of Downtown CampusNewParent_2

A huge thanks to our Parent Association and all the parents who donated delicious food to the New Parent Dinner on Tuesday night.  Each year, it is such a treat to welcome new High School parents and hear their impressions of their children’s first few days.  From more than one parent, I heard comments like “I haven’t seen her this energized about her academics in a long time.”  And several parents are doing some of the reading along with their students!  We are glad to have all our new families as part of the St. Francis community.

Projects began this week during the last period on Thursday afternoon.  Our Playwriting class with Actors Theatre Education Director Jane Jones and our Jazz Ensemble and History course with Bob Bertke occur during this time; as well, students can choose from a variety of options like “Making Friends with Your Mind” (meditation/yoga), “Design, Build, Test” (designing and building contraptions a la Science Olympiad), “Knot Fun” (yes, tying all kinds of knots), and more (Cookies, Musicals, The Films of Star Wars, Poker, and Russian Film/Literature).  We do Projects for several reasons – as another form of building community; to allow faculty and staff to share with students an interest outside their normal roles; and to enable students to explore an area of interest (existing or new).

We made an exciting announcement to the student body in Morning Meeting yesterday regarding a change to our drama program.  Historically, our Showcase of Student-Written and -Directed Plays has been in the spring.  This year, we are moving it to December and then, as our spring production, doing a musical!  Theatre Director Rachael Dobring and music maestro Bob Bertke are teaming up with puppet master (and English/Spanish teacher) Juan Ramirez to bring Avenue Q (school version) to life this March!  We are thrilled to introduce musical theater to the High School Campus.

Parents, please mark your calendars for Back-to-School Night on Tuesday, September 8th.  This evening provides the opportunity to go through your child’s schedule, meet his/her teachers, and just generally learn all about the amazing things going on at the High School!
