Wyverns Soar on the Hardwood!

By Reed Gabhart, Head of the Goshen Campus7:8Boys_1

In a season where the Cards, Cats and Hoosiers (indulge me!) have had their ups and downs on the hardwood, we have had a very special season at St. Francis! While all of our teams have been competitive and snared some nice wins, two of our teams have been truly outstanding!

First, our 6th grade girls’ team is still undefeated after last weekend! Under the direction of parent coach Shannon “Calipari” Ragland these young ladies now stand a gaudy 15-0!  But late in a game last weekend, their perfect season was looking shaky. They were trailing Collegiate 11-10 late in the third quarter. Enter Anna Hardwick-Jones. In less time than it takes to heat up a cup of coffee, Anna hit four straight three-pointers to turn a tight game into a rout! From down 11-10, the Wyverns finished the quarter up 28-12 and coasted to victory. Talk about “Showtime!” Coach Ragland shared a video clip of this incredible sequence with us, and we played it at Morning Meeting on Monday in the Main Amp. Let me tell you, the amp was rocking! This weekend, the team enters the league tournament as the No. 1 seed and looks to close out a perfect season on their home floor in Goshen. The semifinals are set for 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and if the Wyverns win, they advance to a 5:00 p.m. final.

And on the boys’ side, our 7/8 boys’ basketball team is giving the Golden State Warriors a run for their money! They currently stand a ridiculous 27-0! With Coach Shavar “Pitino” Cowherd at the helm, these guys have turned into a well-oiled machine that dispatches their opponents with pressure defense and deadly outside shooting. Last weekend, they competed in the Our Savior Lutheran Tournament, where they won their first two games with relative ease to reach the championship round. There they faced West End School, who gave them all they wanted the last time they faced each other.

(I saw that game and was so impressed with our boys’ chemistry and team play). This time it wasn’t so close and our boys prevailed 54-29 to claim the championship hardware! This was our first OSL Tourney championship in 10 years, and we celebrated that accomplishment at Morning Meeting on Wednesday. And kudos to Will Cole,  Connor Gorman, Kyle McLaughlin and Michael Patterson for making the All-Tournament Team. (Yes, that’s right, four Wyverns in the starting five!) Kyle also showed off his acumen from long range by winning the Hot Shot competition during halftime at one of the games!

Congratulations to ALL of our basketball players for their dedication to SFS athletics, their sportsmanship, and their ability to handle the rigors of juggling athletics with academics. And, of course, thanks to ALL of our many faculty and parent coaches. They are great role models for our kids, and this has truly been an inspiring season. Good luck, Wyverns, the rest of the way! While we wait for “March Madness,” let’s welcome “Frantic February” Wyvern-style!
