Last Friday, the 5th grade had a special visit from Riley Elliott’s great-grandfather. Mr. Charles Riley, after whom she is named, served during World War II in North Africa and Italy. His platoon liberated Rome in 1945, and he witnessed the death of Mussolini. He came to St. Francis to share his WWII_5th_3experiences from the war and answer the students’ questions. He also shared a few stories from his days of being a special agent with the FBI. He encouraged the kids to serve their country and remember Veterans’ Day and Armed Services Day. Overall, the students learned detailed information about World War II from Mr. Riley’s personal accounts, and we thoroughly enjoyed his visit. He noted that the kids were well prepared with the questions they presented, and he was lively and gregarious in his responses. The 5th grade class would like to thank Mr. Riley for his service to our country and his time educating a much younger and removed generation about the experiences from the 1940s! It was a special treat.
