Head of Campus Reed Gabhart

Reed Gabhart, Head of Goshen Campus, Director of the SFS Drama Project

Last week on the Goshen Campus, we began a new initiative that we have tried before with mixed results: composting our lunch waste! Under the direction of Garden Coordinator Christine Brinkman and science teacher Carol Clark, our 6th graders are heading up this program and learning environmentally sound principles at the same time. Here is a description from Christine:

“As the Garden Coordinator, my job cannot be successful without the students and the teachers taking advantage of the outside education we have available to us on 64 acres of land.  Carol Clark and I recently decided to continue what the 6th graders experienced at Pine Mountain: take only what you can eat and be conscious of the environment around you.  Learning and talking about decomposition, soil nutrients, the school’s waste, nitrogen, carbon, and the overall bigger picture is part of their curriculum.  So we built some indoor worm bins (vermicomposting) and dug out one outdoor worm bin – another will come once the weather changes.  The students are busy every day collecting coffee grounds from the teachers’ lounge and food waste from the cafeteria. The 6th graders made informational posters and presented at morning meeting about what is and is not acceptable to compost. The waste we are collecting is oil- dairy- meat- and citrus-free. The good news is the chickens love what the worms can’t eat!  And the kids are teaching their peers how it all works. To be in an environment that supports this education is exciting.  To see the kids get motivated by this kind of education is incredible!”

I couldn’t agree more! They actually look like they’re having fun collecting the scraps each day (after getting over the “yuck” factor!). Look for some great pictures showing them in action!

Also, below you will see the Effort Honor Roll chart for the second quarter. It was read at last Friday’s full assembly for our “Readathon.” Congratulation to all of these students for their hard work in the classroom! (And remember, to make the year–end Elizabeth Archibald Effort Honor Roll, a student has to make two out of the first three quarters AND the final quarter!).

Finally, I will be away next week, Sunday through Wednesday, on a school accreditation visit to the Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School in Chicago. I look forward to helping a fellow Independent school in this critical process, while also gaining a fresh perspective on how other independent schools operate. I’ll share any noteworthy findings soon.
