Soccer

Junior Soccer
The Junior Soccer program was developed to give students in Lower School an opportunity to play school-based competition.  St. Francis, Walden, KCD, Collegiate and Brown have combined to form the league that is played on various schools’ campuses. The season kicked off immediately after the start of school year.  The SFS program, which now bolsters close to 30 students on the roster in grades 2nd through 4th, is rolling along well.  With two full rosters, coaches Tony Butler and Arra Whitty are excited after the first week of the season.  The teams practice as a full squad and then split evenly for games. Known as Team Butler and Team Whitty, the Wyverns look poised to become a solid soccer program over the careers of this group.  Both teams played well and had fun on opening weekend.

Upcoming Schedule:
Saturday 8/29 @ St. Francis:  Team Butler v. KCD 8:00 a.m.; Team Whitty v. LCS 10:30 a.m.

MS Soccer
On Friday evening, the Middle School teams traveled to KCD for A and B team matches with the Bearcats.  The A team fell 5-1 but worked hard throughout the game. Owen Carey scored the lone goal on a free kick from 40 yards out.  The B team went down as well (4-0) in their first game as well.  The Middle School B Soccer team took the field on Monday afternoon, playing host to Meredith Dunn.  The Wyverns jumped out early on a goal by Stevaun Butler, but that lead didn’t hold as they fell 5-1.

Upcoming Schedule:
Friday 8/28 Home v. Anchorage:  B Team 4:30 p.m., A Team 5:45 p.m.
Monday 8/31 Home v. OSL:  B Team 4:30 p.m., A Team 5:30 p.m.
Friday 9/4 Home: A Team v. Waldorf 4:30 p.m., B Team v. Brown 5:45 p.m.

HS Soccer
Monday was a beautiful night for soccer as both the Varsity and JV soccer teams took on DeSales on the newly-opened lower field at Goshen. Despite the Varsity team dominating possession and shot stats, they fell 3-1 in the first game.
Chris Malpartida had three shots that required amazing saves from the visiting goalkeeper – two of them headers off long throw-ins from his brother Michael. The Wyverns did notch their first score of the season with a goal from senior Rosemary DeMarco in the 40th minute of the first half. On their fourth consecutive corner kick, the ball dropped to sophomore Alex Resnik’s foot and as his shot ricocheted off a defender, DeMarco crashed the goal to net the rebound.

The JV team gained some valuable experience in the second game, with many players trying out new positions and developing a better understanding of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Angus Middleton made his debut and played very well in the 3-0 loss.

On Wednesday night the Wyverns travelled to KCD to open play in the 7th Region All “A” Tournament.  They opened with a familiar opponent in Whitefield and played an exciting game that ended in PKs.  The Wyverns won to advance to the semifinals against Walden on Thursday night!

In the second game of the night, the A team had a rough start against Noe Middle.  Though the Wyverns played tough, they lost 8-0.

HS Field Hockey
The Varsity field hockey team continued its promising start to the season in the home opener against Butler.  The Wyverns were able to pull out the 4-1 win behind an outstanding performance from junior Madeline Case, who scored two goals in the contest.  Sophomore Hanna Cobb and junior exchange student Sterre Spijker each also netted goals in the victory.  The team moved its record to 2-0 in this early point in the season.

Upcoming Schedule:
Tuesday 9/1 Home v. Eastern 6:00 p.m.
Thursday 9/3 @ Atherton 5:00 p.m.

Golf

The Wyvern golf team is looking to get some new experiences this season.  The golfers will compete in the All “A” Regional Tournament this weekend at Quail Chase Golf Course.  Emerson Mudd, Clay Foye and Ethan Mackin will represent the Wyverns in the event.  This marks the first time in recent history that St. Francis will compete in this event.
